"'The Book of Horrible Stories'... well, at least the author came up with an appropriate title for the collection." —Turner Luce, The OtherWorld Daily*

“Horrible stories, stories in which horrible things happen—what's the difference? If you want to read about plants that sprout human organs, corpse-filled lakes that appear in people's front lawns, and husbands that come back from the dead to profess their love, then go ahead, buy this little book. And keep it away from me.” —Phyllis Steen, Sensible Art*

“I wish I'd spent my money on a hot dog from the gas station instead.” —Anonymous*

The Book of Horrible Stories a short collection of dark faerie tales for the modern age. Buy it... if you dare. (Or if you have some spare change and need something new to read. That would be great, too.)

Since you're here, I guess you need more convincing. This collection of five flash fiction stories plus one contains no horrible stories at all. The author lied. The stories are touching, funny, creepy, and wonderful. On top of that the book is illustrated by the ever-talented Wes Wong. So, bonus. Pictures!

"Preface: Five Stories, Ten Dollars" is a clever meta story about the author character offering to barter essential pieces of their life to an onion-chinned, potato colored faerie man in order to write a book. The tale is a nice rumination on inspiration and the lengths writers will go to in order to create.

In the heartwarming tale of "The Garden Witch and the Boy," a young boy and a witch bond over the small horrors in life that are done by us and to us.

"The Tree in a Field" starts, "A woman who had gotten lost in her thoughts while in the middle of a field suddenly caught herself, looked down, and came to an important realization: She was in the process of turning into a tree." Read on.

The author character is back in "Interlude" exploring how a story can elude a writer and be swallowed up by lakes of the dead.

"Mrs. Ambrose and the Conversational Shimmer" really got to me as I am a sentimental old fool. In the story Mrs. Ambrose talks to a shimmer in her room, and the conversation raises the dead. I can't tell you more.

The closer, "The Book of Horrible Stories," is an exploration of how powerful and intimidating a child's imagination can be to a parent.

It's a Book of Fantastic Stories. It's cheap. It's thirty-one pages, you'll finish it on a train ride or on the bus. It's a small commitment. For goodness sake, get it. Are you still reading this review?

The Book of Horrible Stories edition by Sheila Johnson Wes Wong Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A bit reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's short work. A bit reminiscent of Kelly Link. Evoking the logic of a dream or a fairy tale without being obnoxiously surreal. The illustrations by Wesley Wong highlight each piece. The difference between dark fantasy and horror is often a tough one; the distinction I often make is if you actually stop to stare at the strange beast about to eat you, then you're probably in dark fantasy territory. The e-book is well worth the price if you can't find one of the beautiful print copies.
